STORY
プロローグ「祇園精舎」
平家の盛衰を弾き語る琵琶法師たちが月光に浮かぶ。開幕である。
Prologue: Gion Shoja
The curtain rises as the Biwa lute playing monks are illuminated by the moon light playing the songs of the Heike (Taira Family)'s rise and fall.
一幕一場「紅葉の宴」
栄華を極める平清盛が、愛娘徳子を高倉帝へ嫁がせる目的で宴が催される。繰り広げられる女官や白拍子の踊りに満足する高倉帝と、その父の後白河上皇。めでたく徳子入内が成立し、祝福の舞が続く。
Act I Scene1: The Banquet of the Autumn Leaves
Taira no Kiyomori at his height of glory hosts a banquet celebrating the arranged engagement of his beloved daughter Tokuko to Emperor Takakura. The celebration continues as the Emperor Takakura and his father ex-Emperor Go-Shirakawa gazes contently at the kabuki dance performances.
一幕二場「清盛専横」
清盛の台頭に、影の薄い後白河上皇周辺の、清盛排斥の動きを察知した清盛の怒りは凄まじい。それを諌めるため、清盛の嫡男重盛は、白拍子の妓王と仏御前の舞を企図。一戦を思いとどまる清盛は、以後、古参の妓王に代わり、仏御前を寵愛することとなる。
Act I Scene 2: Tyranny of Kiyomori
Kiyomori's fury was fierce upon finding the now seemingly harmless ex-Emperor Go-Shirakawa's men plotting to remove Kiyomori from power. To cool him down, eldest son Shigemori holds a banquet of kabuki dance performances by the beautiful Gioh and Hotokegozen. Calmed down Kiyomori retracts his fever for war and takes in Hotokegozen as his new mistress, replacing Gioh.
二幕一場「その頃、都の流行といえば」
平家統治の京の街。役人と盗賊の癒着に辟易する庶民の姿が、五条坊門市場にある。
Act II Scene 1: Meanwhile, back in the City
Kyoto under Heike rule. At the Gojobomon market, people are seen fed up with the collusion of arrogant bureaucrats and thieves.
二幕二場「東大寺炎上」
平家横暴に反旗を翻し、長刀を振るう僧兵たち。太刀で応戦するのは平家の武将。やがて、街は一面火の海と化し、ついに東大寺炎上。戦火に追われる僧侶、逃げ惑う商人、野垂れ死にする女たち。赤々と天を焦す炎。黒々と山をなすのは累々たる屍である。
Act II Scene 2: Todaiji Temple Burning
Swords in hands, fed up troop of priests revolt against the Heike tyranny. Heike warriors respond. Soon the whole city was set ablaze, the Todaiji Temple was burning. Monks running from the blaze, merchants and women were dying from fire... The black smoked bodies were piling into a mountain of death.
二幕三場「皇子誕生」
陣痛に身をよじり苦しむ徳子と、それを介助する侍女たち。懸命に経を唱え護摩を焚く清盛は、周囲にはびこる悪霊どもを退散させる。無事、男児を出産する徳子。権勢を忘れ、ただの人として喜ぶ清盛。だが、好々爺の表情も束の間、未来の帝の祖父となった清盛は、確かな権力を得た歓喜に足を踏み鳴らすのであった。
Act II Scene 3: Birth of a Prince
Tokuko in labor pains and maids surround her to give her support. Kiyomori praying and chanting frantically gets rid of the evil spirits. Tokuko bears a boy. Kiyomori rejoices not as the ruler but simply a man. But slowly and surely the triumphant joy of new power gained from being the grandfather to the future throne sinks in.
二幕四場「忍ぶ恋」
徳子の侍女の愛らしい娘、小督に目を留めた高倉帝。忍ぶ恋に溺れる二人と嫉妬に苛まれる徳子。それを知り憤怒の清盛は、小督を追放する。徳子の父として、安徳帝の祖父として、満足な表情の清盛を、突然の病魔が襲う。
Act II Scene 4: Secret Affair
Emperor Takakura catching glimpse and fall in love with Kogoh, a lovely daughter of Tokuko's maid. The two get absorbed into a secret affair, Tokuko mad with jealousy. Kiyomori expels Kogoh upon hearing about the affair. A sudden illness afflicts Kiyomori, the happy father of Tokuko, grandfather of Prince Antoku.
二幕五場「清盛の死」
医師の治療、侍女の介護、僧侶の祈祷、そして清盛自身の強い生への執着にもかかわらず、清盛の命は尽きてしまう。こうして、一つの時代は終焉を迎えるのである。
Act II Scene 5: The Death of Kiyomori
Even with the doctor's treatments, maids' care, prayers of the monks, and his own strong attachment for life, Kiyomori is dead. The end of his era.
三幕一場「都落ち」
戦場と化した都を後にする平家の女官たちの列に、後に建礼門院となる徳子と、祖母の二位の尼に抱かれた幼い安徳帝の姿がある。源氏の兵はもう間近。平家の命運は風前の灯であった。
Act III Scene 1: Fall of Kyoto
Tokuko who will later become known as Kenreimon-in and the baby prince Antoku held in the arms of his grandmother Nii-no-ama follow the escaping ladies of the imperial palace. The Genji troops are closing in. The fate of the Heike is nearing its end.
三幕二場「壇の浦」
敵兵に追われる徳子、身投げする女官たち。哀れ二位の尼と共に入水する安徳帝。源義経に追われ、もはやこれまでと、波に飲み込まれた徳子が海の底に見たものは…。
Act III Scene 2: Dan no Ura
Tokuko is chased by the enemy soldiers, resigned ladies drowning themselves, poor Nii-no-ama holding baby prince Antoku is also going down. Given up hope, Tokuko lets herself be swallowed by the waves and sees, at the ocean bottom during her fall into the abyss,...
